Dr. Scott Wilkes was born and raised in Rexburg and graduated from Madison High School. After studying at Ricks College, and graduating from Brigham Young University he attended the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry, in Richmond, VA where he graduated in 2005.
After practicing in Boise, ID, at a children’s Medicaid clinic, he returned to Rexburg and joined The Dental Health Center in 2007. Dr. Wilkes enjoys everything about dentistry and appreciates working with patients of all ages. Recently, he completed additional training in oral conscious sedation. He loves the new ability to help patients with deep rooted fears have their dental work performed in a relaxed, comfortable setting. Patients often comment about Dr. Wilkes gentle touch and excellent dentistry.Dr. Wilkes enjoys spending time with his wife and four children, reading, enjoying outdoor recreation and providing service in his community and church.
Dr. Ryan Smith is a graduate of the University Of Kentucky School Of Dental Medicine with a DMD degree, and is a member of the American Dental Association and the Academy of General Dentists. His training and natural ability have made him capable of providing what patients need most. He has also recently completed a course in sedation, which allows him to provide the highest level of comfort to patients that have anxiety during dental work.
He is proud to return home to Rexburg, where his family roots run deep. The Smith ancestors helped settle the Rexburg area over a century ago and they’ve resided there ever since. Dr. Smith looks forward to serving the people of Rexburg. He is excited for the opportunity to provide patients with the best and most technologically advanced treatment available while working at The Dental Health Center.

The procedure begins with a short preparation to cover your lips and gums, leaving only your teeth exposed. The ZOOM! clinician then applies the proprietary ZOOM! whitening gel, which is designed to be used with a specially designed light. The ZOOM! light and gel work together to gently penetrate your teeth, breaking up stains and discoloration.The complete procedure takes less than an hour. Following the preparation period, three cycles of 15 minutes each totally to 45 minutes completes the procedure.

Tooth decay, or cavities can be a significant challenge for children and adults and if they are left untreated can lead to more serious dental concerns. They can be painful before they are treated, costly to correct and time consuming. To have better oral health and happy patients The Dental Health Center offers sealants and fluoride treatments to prevent invasive tooth decay.
Sealants are a clear or tooth colored plastic coating that is applied to grooves and deep pits. The sealant fills the areas where decay most likely occurs. Sealants are very effective in preventing tooth decay on the biting surfaces, for this reason our dentists place special emphasis on sealants. There is no need anesthetic or drilling while placing sealants. Preventing tooth decay is essential, that’s why sealants and fluoride are some of the most important preventive services we offer.
Most pediatric dentists will agree that regular dental care should begin by one year of age, with a dental check-up at least twice each consecutive year for most children. Some children may need more frequent evaluations and care. In accordance with this recommendation, the following dental checklist for infants and toddlers has been provided by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry:
Birth to 6 months of age:Clean the infant’s mouth with gauze after feedings and bedtime. Consult your child’s pediatrician regarding fluoride supplements.Six to 12 months of age:During this time, the first tooth should appear. Consult the Pediatric dentist for an examination. Brush teeth after each feeding and at bedtime with a small, soft-bristled brush. As the child begins to walk, stay alert of potential dental and/or facial injuries.
Twelve to 24 months of age:Follow the schedule of dental examinations and cleanings, as recommended by your child’s pediatric dentist. Generally, dental examinations and cleanings are recommended every 6 months for children and adults.As your child learns to rinse his/her mouth, and as most deciduous baby teeth have erupted by this age, brushing with a pea-sized portion of fluoridated toothpaste becomes appropriate.
Facts about deciduous teeth:Proper care of a child’s baby teeth is very important. These teeth hold space for the future permanent teeth.If a baby tooth decays or is removed too early, the space necessary for the permanent teeth is lost and can only be regained through orthodontic treatment.
Infected baby teeth can cause the permanent teeth to develop improperly resulting in stains, pits, and weaker teeth.Most children begin losing their baby teeth around the age of 4 – usually the front bottom teeth first. They continue to lose baby teeth until the age of 12 or 13 when all of the permanent teeth finally come through.
Thumb-Sucking and Dental Health.Generally, thumb-sucking before the age of two is normal and harmless. When thumb-sucking is not stopped by the appropriate age (generally by the age of five) then parents should discourage the act. Prolonged thumb-sucking may contribute to crowded and/or crooked teeth development and bite problems.
